Creature from the Black Lagoon is a pinball machine designed by John Trudeau ('Dr. Flash') and released by Midway (under the Bally brand name). It is loosely based on the movie of the same name. The game's theme is 1950's drive-in theater. The pinball game was licensed from Universal Studios by Bally so that all backglass and cabinet artwork and creature depictions would resemble those of the original movie.[1]

Hologram[edit]

The centerpiece of the table's playfield is a holographic depiction of the titular Creature, illuminated and in motion during multiball play within its 'Black Lagoon habitat' (the space beneath the playfield visible through a customized window). The green hologram was produced by Polaroid and is affixed to a metal plate that is divided into three sections which are designed so that the hologram appears to float. A cam behind one of sections presses against the back of the plate, gently bending the hologram's surface, so that the Creature appears to 'ripple' as if underwater and to swipe at the player with its claw. A 2nd motor mounted in the bottom of the cabinet oscillates the light reflecting mirror, changing the direction of the light source and causing the image of the creature to slowly turn from side to side.

Gameplay[edit]

The main objective of the game is to collect the four letters in F-I-L-M to activate the game's wizard mode, Rescue the Girl. Casino close to tillamook or. They are, from left-to-right:

F: Shoot the ball into the left K-I-S-S scoop four times to collect the letter F. The letter F can also be collected on the skill shot.

I: Light the four menu targets to open the Snack Bar and collect the letter I. Menu targets can also be lit by shooting into the Snack Bar.

L: Complete the P-A-I-D rollovers at the top right of the playfield to collect the letter L. The letter L can also be collected on the skill shot, by shooting the ball into whichever rollover is flashing.

M: Shoot the ball into the Slide (right scoop) to collect the letter M.

F-I-L-M letters can also be collected as Snack Bar rewards. Once the four letters in F-I-L-M are collected, shoot the ball into the left or right scoop to begin a 2-ball multiball. The Creature will randomly hide the girl in one of three locations: the left scoop, the Snack Bar scoop, or the right scoop. Shooting the ball into the correct scoop, then into the Snack Bar scoop, then again into the Snack Bar scoop, scores a Jackpot. The Jackpot value starts at 40 million, but increases with each jet bumper hit. Once the Jackpot has been collected, after a certain number of jet bumper hits, the Super Jackpot will light up. Shooting into the Snack Bar scoop will score a Super Jackpot, whose value is twice the current Jackpot value, multiplied by the field multiplier currently on the board.

Additional scoring modes or methods include:

Snack Bar: When the Snack Bar is open, shooting into this scoop gives a random reward.

Mega Menu: The four menu targets are lit. These targets are worth 5, 10, 15, and 20 million.

Songs[edit]

There were five 1950's songs put in the game. These are:

  • 'Rock Around the Clock' by Bill Haley and the Comets
  • 'Get a Job' by The Silhouettes
  • 'Summertime Blues' by Eddie Cochran
  • 'Willie and the Hand Jive' by Johnny Otis
  • 'Red River Rock' (Johnny and the Hurricanes version)

All of the songs are synthesizer-based instrumental versions played by the game's sound hardware.

Digital versions[edit]

Creature from the Black Lagoon is available as a licensed table of The Pinball Arcade for several platforms. Due to licensing issues however only three of the five songs have been kept intact for this version. In addition to the three songs, two Easter Eggs which refer to Mortal Kombat are disabled since the game's Family Mode is permanently activated in the Pinball Arcade incarnation. This table is also included in Williams Pinball Classics (2001) for PC.[2]

Plot[edit]

The show began with a clip from The Today Show with Matt Lauer, talking about the Creature. The premise was that Universal made the film based on a real creature, and a new team of explorers were on a second expedition to investigate, the principals being Kay, Mark & David (all characters which also appeared in the original film).

Aboard the Rita, the Captain (which in this version, is an Amazonian woman - a voo-doo Shirley Bassey) leads the cast in the opening number, “Black Lagoon'.

Kay vents her romantic frustrations with her fiancé in the second song, “Slay Me'. The song recreates the famous 'swimming sequence' from the original movie, in which Kay swims while the Creature observes her below, tantalized.

The next song is “Prime Evil', in which everyone sings about the Creature. To the dismay of the cast, the Creature climbs onto the boat and joins the song.

The Creature kidnaps Kay and takes her back to his lair, which bears a resemblance to an underwater grotto bachelor pad. This is where the Creature and Kay bond during their duet, 'Strange New Hunger'. Mark and David, Kay's fellow scientists, rush in to save Kay. The Creature tells her his name..Gill! He gets shot with a tainted speargun, with results that soon become clear.

Back aboard the Rita, the scientists hear massive footsteps. It turns out the spear that pierced Gill had fallen into a supply of 'human growth hormone' and the Creature, now 25 feet high, appears. Kay sings an encore of “Strange New Hunger', rising to the level of the Gill's face on a vine. Before he can stop himself, the Creature eats her..and the Captain sums up the unpredictability of love with an encore of 'Black Lagoon'.

History[edit]

Due to the recent unpopularity of the park's former Fear Factor Live show, the attraction went down for improvements in spring 2007 and early 2008, both failing to outperform their previous versions. Because of this, Universal closed the attraction on August 14, 2008, confirming that it would soon be replaced by a Creature From the Black Lagoon-themed show titled Creature From the Black Lagoon- The Musical https://calgaryomg.netlify.app/real-money-poker-app-paypal.html. to open the following Spring. Fred Barton served as composer and co-lyricist, Gerard Alessandrini served as co-lyricist and co-director. Peter Fish provided additional music and Lynne Taylor-Corbett received final credit as choreographer and director. Jonathan Tolins is the scriptwriter, and the production is co-produced by Marc Routh and Broadway Attractions. Due to lack of audience interest, 'Creature from the Black Lagoon: The Musical' was closed temporarily in mid September. On March 9, 2010, Universal Studios Hollywood revealed that the attraction had been officially closed. On June 26, 2010, the venue reopened with an updated version of the lower lot special effects show entitled Special Effects Stage.[citation needed]

Location[edit]

The show was located in the Castle Theater located in the Upper Lot (Entertainment Center), which has hosted many shows in the park's past including The Land of a Thousand Faces, Conan the Barbarian, Beetlejuice's Rock and Roll Graveyard Revue, Castle Dracula Live Show, Spider-Man Rocks and Fear Factor Live. Closure[edit]

As of October 2009, during a performance of Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure for Halloween Horror Nights in the building, parts of the sets caught on fire, and the building had to be evacuated during these incidents so the fire could be put out. This resulted in fire and safety code violations in the building, and it remained closed after Horror Nights, with the show not re-opening. It was scheduled to start performances again in January 2010, but due to lack of audience interest, it was left closed. Pieces of the set are said to be seen in the Tram Garage area.
